Everything Is Coming Up Rose Gold

October 24, 2016

Suddenly, rose gold is everywhere. It came into fashion for jewelry and hardware several seasons ago, when everyone including  Apple, Beats and Nike introduced it into their collections of technology. The color, which occurs when a small amount of copper is added to gold, giving it a pinkish tinge, lent a fashionable edge to smartphones and computors. Since pink is thought to inspire calm and peacefullness, the color couldn’t have hit it’s peak at a more crucial time.
Today, rose gold is showing up in clothing, technology, accessories and even hair color, as the trend reaches a fever pitch.

Apple offers it’s Macbooks and iPhones in rose gold.

Dress Over Pants

August 3, 2016

Just when we think there isn’t a new way to style jeans, or layer, we spot something new that elevates our everyday items to high fashion status.

Suddenly, chic women are wearing ultra girlie dresses with slim jeans or trousers underneath for a new play on proportion and quirky femininity.

At DKNY, a crimson slip dress layers over slouchy trousers.

Are you ready to pull this look off ? The secret is clearly in the mix…be sure to balance a dres that is uber feminine with pants that are more casual ( you can’t go wrong with skinny jeans!) and have fun with your footwear. It’s the perfect way to breathe life into those girlie dresses relegated to the back of the closet!

Slide Show

June 3, 2016

The pitter patter of little feet will be coming to an office or restaurant near you. No, we don’t mean someone is expecting a baby. We’re talking about slides and mules, those late 90’s throwbacks that make a rather annoying sound as our feet slap about when we walk.

This time around, there are lots of variations to the theme. From pancake flats to chunky block heels, there’s one thing to be sure of… they’re back!

Low heels and closed pointed toes make these mules almost seasonless:

Simple slip on slides in tumbled leather or metallics:

Wide crossed straps, embellishments and chunky soles take “shower shoes” to the next level.

Chunky heels and peep toes in colored suede, denim or floral prints modernize the mule and are the perfect warm weather option that’s not too bare:

If last year was about the Birkenstock, this summer will be all about the designer Dr. Scholl:

Whatever shape you choose, it’s time to slide into summer!

Leave It Behind: Say Goodbye to These 2015 Beauty Trends

January 4, 2016

The year is over, and it is a good time to reflect on the past and start anew. Some things worked well in 2015, others, not so much.  Let’s take a peek at some of this year’s biggest beauty trends that are best left behind as we move into the new year:

Extreme Contouring:

We’re looking at you Kardashians! While contouring can completely change the look of one’s face, when poorly executed, it is disastrous! Even the most deftly applied contouring looks like a mask. Save this technique for professional photoshoots, and “you do you” the rest of the time.

Giant Lips:

The Kylie Jenner lip challenge had women all over the world trying a lip plumping technique that involved using household items to provide suction. While many did get plumper lips, they often experienced bruising, swelling and pain along with them. Kylie later admitted that hers came from a top plastic surgeon and not a Poland Springs bottle, leaving all those sheep who followed along, feeling, well, sheepish. Just say no to crazy and painful trends and try a good lip liner and some gloss to make your kisser look fuller.

Long Pointy “Stilletto” Nails:

After years of well groomed “squaound” nails ( that’s squared off round to those of you not familiar with the term), women started sporting long pointy talons again. Not only do they look a little trashy in our humble opinion, it is almost impossible to function with them. Or maybe that’s the point.

The Faux Man Bun:

Hipsters united this year over the man bun. Pulling their longish hair into a neat bun and offsetting it with facial hair was a look that a certain type of man could really work. For those who took a more conservative approach to grooming but wanted to try the look on for size, companies introduced the clip on man bun. Do we even need to discuss this one? Run, do not walk away from this look now. No good can come of it.

Drawn on Big Bold Brows:

Cara Delavigne became the poster child for bold brows, and women world over aspired to get the look. News flash: if you don’t have the brows, drawing them on and coloring them in with a dark brow pencil doesn’t achieve the same effect. If you want to channel a cartoon character, carry on. Otherwise, back away.

Cultural Appropriation:

Hair styles associated with specific cultures spurred trends this year. Blatent appropriation was just plain wrong. Celebrate your heritage, but please, be respectful. Sometimes imitation really isn’t the best form of flattery.

What beauty trends do you think should be left behind this year? Let us know in the comments!

Two Are Better Than One

December 4, 2015

Every December, the color experts at Pantone announce their choice for the color of the year. This time, they surprised us by declaring not one, but two shades, as the colors of the year for 2o16.

BN-LN077_1202FA_M_20151201160641

Serenity, an icy blue, and Rose Quartz, a soft classic pink, are intended to evoke a sense of gender equality and fluidity, reflecting in fashion, what is happening in society.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute: “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”

Pantone has commissioned street artists in Los Angeles, Miami and New York City to create murals overnight to depict the two shades.

Cuff ’em

June 25, 2014

Sometimes, it’s not what you wear, but how you wear it, that separates the uber stylish from the rest of the pack.

This summer, the wide cuffed jean is making a comeback, replacing the nonchalant double roll of yesterday.

Stiffer, less broken in denim tends to hold the cuff better, but white works as well as indigo.

Sites We Love

December 9, 2009

Lately, it seems that everyone is a fashion expert. From Lindsay Lohan’s debacle as creative director at Ungaro, to Jon Gosselin trying to launch (unsuccessfully, I am relieved to report) a kid’s line, everyone who actually wears clothes, has become a self-proclaimed expert. But every once in a while, you stumble upon a site that has a fresh point of view, a great eye for trend, and a “tell it like it is” approach to reporting on it all. Such is the case with Refinery 29, a fashion blog that really gets it, in a non-pretentious, yet authoritative way.

Refinery 29 is a great destination for the newest and best in style, shopping and emerging trends. They deliver insightful reports on designers, global street style trends, new boutiques and sample sales, as well as the latest places to be, and people to watch.

Check out their site, and sign up for their daily Pipeline report via email.
