Take Flight

January 27, 2016

Look out leather moto jacket…there is a new style in town and it is gaining momentum!
We’ve been seeing the flight jacket popping up for a few seasons now, but it looks like it could be poised to replace our beloved biker jackets as the item of choice.

French label Sacai paired the classic olive flight jacket with a lace skirt for their pre-fall collection.

Burberry took their flight jacket to new proportions for their version in leather for pre-fall.

Dsquared2’s ode to flight is in airforce blue and cinched at the waist.

Cool kids favorite Rag + Bone got into the act with a quilted satin version for pre-fall.

The true test of a trend gone wild is the proliferation of them seen on the concrete catwalk:

Fashion Statements

February 23, 2015

Political statements on tee shirts are not new. People often take to tees to show their support for various causes. This season, designers are using the runway to get the message across with oversized graphic treatments expressing thier points of view.

It started with Alexander McQueen’s menswear collection, when he showed pinstriped suits and chunky sweaters emblazoned with virtuous words, such as honour, and valour.

Just a few days later, Acne Studios made their statement on long fringed scarves bearing the slogans ” radical feminist” and “gender equality.”

Marc Jacobs continued the trend, featuring the words, “choice” and “solidarity” in his Marc by Marc Jacob women’s collection, shown in New York this week.

This kind of gives a whole new meaning to the term fashion statement, doesn’t it?

Shouldering It

October 2, 2013

The weather is changing rapidly. One week it’ s pleasantly cool in New York City, and then suddenly, it’s back in the 80’s again. It starts off in the 50’s and 60’s in the early morning, and hits near tropical temperatures by mid afternoon. Deciding what to wear is a challenge. I mean, it’s October after all!

No worries, we are here to help!

honestly, WTF

This season, the chicest way to wear to your coat or jacket, is not to wear it all. That’s right; just toss it nonchalantly over your shoulders and go, as these fashionistas on the street are doing.  It ‘s a simple case of form meeting function, with form leading the way.

Think Pink

December 19, 2012

Pink was the surprise color of the season, with hues ranging from strong and vibrant, to soft and pastel ruling the runways.

Even the softest of shades had a strength to them. This is not your average girlie pink!

Costume National used  hot pink for modern clothes with a sexy vibe:

Burberry mixed their rich pink with red, for a new silhouette with exaggerated round shoulders and a nipped waist:

Elber Albaz took a minimalist approach to magenta with a simply cut sheath dress for Lanvin:

Raf Simons popped his pale pink with a bright yellow lining and edgy black shorts for Christian Dior:

Balmain used a vibrant pink for laced up shoes in rich satin:

Playing With Plaid

November 12, 2012

Plaids are trending for Spring 2013, with a cleaned up yet “grungy” sensibility that hit the catwalks. Love the trend? Why wait? Here is some style inspiration that you can wear right now…

Anna Sui layered a plaid shirt over a printed top and a pleated denim skirt:

Try it for winter with addition of heavy tights and short lace up boots.

Marc by Marc Jacobs worked a plaid shirt dress with a contrasting checked shirt:

Winterize the look by layering a long sleeved Henley style t-shirt under the dress and ribbed tights.  Swap the printed wrapped waist for a rustic leather belt and a scarf wrapped neckline.

Dries Van Noten mixed contrasting plaids together in one ensemble for a modern take on grunge:

Try it with your way, by mixing a plaid shirt with a checked or plaid jacket or bottom. Keep the colors similar when mixing patterns, and play with scale so the look is unexpected, yet controlled.  Add a denim jacket or a chunky sweater for warmth.

Color Play

October 26, 2012

Color is taking over the gym floor, with bright sneakers replacing the classic white, black or grey models.

Trainers waiting for their clients yesterday morning at Equinox, in New York City.

Real men wear raspberry… a trainer and his client both rocking raspberry sneakers: 2 of the 6 men I noticed wearing raspberry while working out in close proximity this morning.

Bright blues and turquoise were also prominent.

A couple on Fifth Avenue were color coordinated. LOVE the orange laces and neon green socks!

If It’s Thursday, It Must Be Copenhagen

June 14, 2012

The Scandinavian Fashionista Road Show has come to an end, and I am enjoying a quiet evening before embarking on my journey home tomorrow.

The presentations were very well received, and I met some great people in both Stockholm and Copenhagen these past 2 days.

Here are a few of them:

The streets of Copenhagen were filled with activity tonight. Here are a few of the street performers I encountered:

Blowing giant bubbles

Most rode bikes, but these folks commuted via Segue

The shops were closed, but the windows were open, and I managed to document a little of the local style. They have embraced the pastel trend for both men and women, and it’s looking great!

There is also a blue mood that is permeating style for home and fashion.

It’s been a great albeit hectic trip, and I head back Stateside early in the morning.

I’ll be back on-line and posting before you know it!
