Fashion is going through a phase right now, with business leaders trying to figure out when and how is the best time to release new products. As fashion month progresses, more and more designers are showing “see now, buy now, and wear now” collections. Department and specialty stores alike, are struggling with seasonality and mark downs, effectively taking place before anyone can even wear the product. While retailers struggle to find the next big thing to drive sales, there is one item that is having a major resurgence; the concert tee shirt. The category has become so strong, that it has been coined with it’s own name: merch.
Merch wasn’t intended to be fashion. It was created to mark an event, and show support for your favorite artist. Until now. Merch has taken on a life of it’s own, and old concert tees have become chic collectibles. Artists from Justin Bieber, to Kanye West, are selling lines of tour inspired merchandise in  pop up stores, (Saint Pablo tour) and boutiques. Bieber has placed his Purpose Tour items at Urban Outfitters, and had an exclusive collaboration with uber high-end retailer, Barneys New York. Even Zayn Malik got into the act, with a line of “Mind of Mine” merch available exclusively on, where a 21 piece collection of items “he would like to wear”, is on sale.
But don’t think you can toss any old concert tee on with just a pair of jeans and go. Merch has been elevated to a whole new level, with street style stars making the look their own. Below are a few of our favorites:

Take Flight

January 27, 2016

Look out leather moto jacket…there is a new style in town and it is gaining momentum!
We’ve been seeing the flight jacket popping up for a few seasons now, but it looks like it could be poised to replace our beloved biker jackets as the item of choice.

French label Sacai paired the classic olive flight jacket with a lace skirt for their pre-fall collection.

Burberry took their flight jacket to new proportions for their version in leather for pre-fall.

Dsquared2’s ode to flight is in airforce blue and cinched at the waist.

Cool kids favorite Rag + Bone got into the act with a quilted satin version for pre-fall.

The true test of a trend gone wild is the proliferation of them seen on the concrete catwalk:

Wrap it Up

February 14, 2014

With all of the snow, rain and freezing temperatures wrecking havoc across much of the country, sometimes we just want to curl up in our bathrobe and stay in.

While that isn’t always possible, designers are offering a close “second best,” showing cozy wrap coats that are chic, and practical.

Richard Chai Love wrapped it up in a softly  brushed plaid:

Joseph Altuzarra used bold color blocking and strong proportions for his robe styled coat:

As seen on the streets at New York Fashion Week:

Reed Krakoff kept it minimal with a skinny leather tie, cinching his camel coat:

Sports reference have been taking over the runways for several seasons now, but the latest version is emerging from the street. Cool fashionistas are wearing sports jerseys for a look that is laid back yet totally chic.

Addidas adds a high/low hemline to their jersey, making it a sexy, yet sporty option over tiny basketball shorts.

This football jersey stands in as a dress, paired with sexy heels and a Gucci clutch.

Layer a basketball jersey over a tee and pushed up slim pants. The unexpected addition of heels, takes the look from the courts to the streets.

Tommy Hilfiger took the look from the boardwalk to the catwalk, with his sporty take on the theme. Add an upscale sneaker to the mix for a look that is relaxed and edgy.

If It’s Thursday, It Must Be Copenhagen

June 14, 2012

The Scandinavian Fashionista Road Show has come to an end, and I am enjoying a quiet evening before embarking on my journey home tomorrow.

The presentations were very well received, and I met some great people in both Stockholm and Copenhagen these past 2 days.

Here are a few of them:

The streets of Copenhagen were filled with activity tonight. Here are a few of the street performers I encountered:

Most rode bikes, but these folks commuted via Segue

The shops were closed, but the windows were open, and I managed to document a little of the local style. They have embraced the pastel trend for both men and women, and it’s looking great!

There is also a blue mood that is permeating style for home and fashion.

It’s been a great albeit hectic trip, and I head back Stateside early in the morning.

I’ll be back on-line and posting before you know it!

Take it to the Streets

June 11, 2012

The weather in Gothenburg, Sweden is cold and wet. While it may feel more like October than June, the stores tell a different story.

Color is everywhere, and garden florals are abundant.

Bare tops, dresses, and swimwear grace the windows, in the hope that soon it will be warm enough to be able to wear them.

The look here is casual, yet feminine, and the vibe is very relaxed.  I hope the sun comes out soon!
