Superheros

October 5, 2015

It has been a busy week, with no sign of it letting up for awhile.
This weekend was spent with a very special “client”who requested a “Spiderman birthday cake with 3 candles, and marshmallows for all my friends.”

Done and done. Here are a few photos of one happy customer and the cakes:

There were actually two cakes: a 3-layer chocolate cake with buttercream frosting, and oreo cookie crumble. It was surrounded by mini cupcakes. The other cake was Spidey himself.

The layer cake was topped with balloons, and a some hand molded chocolate spider lolly pops.

The marshmallows, as he calls them are actually s’mores. These had spider webs on them.

Homemade melt in your mouth graham crackers. Fluffy artisanal marshmallows roasted to caramelized perfection. Chunks of rich chocolate. I mean, what’s not to love?

Sisterhood

April 29, 2015

This weekend, our s’mores got the opportunity to attend a brunch called “Keep the Drama on the Stage,” which brought together young women of color to foster solidarity, rather than competition for limited roles in film, stage and television.

unnamed

Hosted by actress Eden Duncan-Smith, the event was modeled after
Alfre Woodard’s annual pre-Oscars Sisters Soiree, with an aim to “dismantle the casting myth that divides [young Black actresses]: There is only room for one.”

Duncan-Smith tells BET: “I’m tired of people thinking that girls of color don’t get along. The spirit of competition that keeps us from supporting each other also exhausts me,” Duncan-Smith says. “I wanted to support Keep The Drama on The Stage because it would be a first step to humanizing (or sister-izing) us.”

Eden Duncan-Smith has already forged a successful career at age 15, with roles in the film, “Annie,” and the Tony award winning plays Fences, and The Lion King. She is currently in “Meadowlands,” which is debuting at the Tribeca Film Festival this month.

Our flower shaped s’mores on a stick got rave reviews. Maybe there is an award in our future some day too!!

Kitchen Tips Tuesday: Keep Brown Sugar Soft

March 3, 2015

I finally got the last of the missing s’mores back on Friday, over 2 1/2 weeks after they were sent via the USPS’s 2-Day Priority  service. The good news: They traveled well. All 4 were still intact, and looking as though they were just packed. The marshmallows were still soft. The bad news: so were the graham crackers.

I thought they would have been close to petrified by now; dried out and hard as a rock. Instead, the marshmallow made the cookies soft. In fact too soft. I tried to figure out what happened and then it hit me!

Storing brown sugar with marshmallow is a great way to keep it soft.  Since my graham crackers contain a high percentage of brown sugar, it would make sense that the marshmallows in the s’mores added moisture, making the cookie soggy, instead of dry.

While it’s not the optimum situation for a s’more, it is the perfect solution to keeping brown sugar from hardening.

I’m sold.

This Pretty Much Sums it Up!

December 17, 2014

Since the launch of indigo jones eats, I’ve learned a lot about taking my passion: cooking, and doing it in a large quantity, on demand. I am so excited that people have embraced my little endeavor, and orders are coming in!
I have chosen to make things that are multi-faceted and time consuming. Each item is made by hand, and has multiple components. Assembling the items and packages takes a lot of time. Because I am just starting out, I am making my own labels and packaging, and sometimes doing deliveries myself, in addition to baking.
While I LOVE every second of it, I have to admit that I am figuring it out as I go. Each new order is met with exhilaration and a little fear, as I calculate what it takes to fill it. So far, it’s all good. Orders are going out on time, and met with rave reviews. I even manage to get the kitchen cleaned up before starting the next batch! Even so, I can’t help but feel a little like Lucy in one of my favorite television moments of all time:

If anyone wants to be my Ethel, drop me a line!
