The Met Gala: What were they thinking?

May 5, 2015

We promised to cover the Met Gala red carpet, to see who slayed it and who missed the mark. Silly us, worried about cultural missteps. We should have been concerned with fashion faux pas. TasselsĀ and headresses and glitz, oh my!
How do you say ” Oy vey” in Mandarin?

Sarah Jessica Parker stepped out in a fringed headressĀ from milliner Phillip Treacy and a custom H&M gown which she collaborated on. Speechless.

They don’t call it the “Vogue Prom” for nothing. Anna Wintour, whose name is now on the door of the Costume Institute, greets her disciples in Chanel. As they remind us often in fitness classes; take your shoulders out of your ears and relax, Anna!

Her daugher, Bee Shaffer, fared much better in a dramatic Alexander McQueen gown:

Tabitha Simmons donned a headress too, by Dolce and Gabbana. The Folies Bergere wants it back in the morning.

What’s with the head coverings? Anne Hathaway lost her way in this number, by the big bad wolf by Ralph Lauren.

Awards season is in full swing, and stars are relaxing the dress code and abandoning the screen siren gown for something a little more low key.Last week we showed you who wore the pants at the People’s Choice awards. Today, lets take a peek at the cocktail length dresses with a 50’s vibe that turned up on the Critic’s Choice red carpet.

Who Wears The Pants?

January 9, 2015

The People’s Choice Awards took place this week, and the first red carpet trend of the year has emerged from an otherwise rather lackluster assortment.
Strong, confident women in the world of television, film and music, shed their frou frou dresses in favor of pants ensembles. From jumpsuits to two piece looks, these women looked polished and sophisticated.

So, who wore the pants this year?
Parenthood’s Monica Potter may have botched introducing rapper Iggy Azalea, but her black halter top jumpsuit with chain detailĀ was spot on.

Ellen Pompeo of Grey’s Anatomy was pretty in peach, with sexy lace panels from Elie Saab.

Disney’s Bella Throne looked sophisticated in a black Armani suit, sans blouse, for a discreetly sexy take on the tux.

Funny lady Melissa McCarthy’s leather trimmed pantsuit fit her curves to perfection.

Australian rapper Iggy Azaelia paired wide legged black trousers with a beaded cropped top.

The evening’s hostess with the mostest, Anna Faris sparkled in a two piece look byĀ Naeem Khan.

Black is the New Black

November 24, 2014

The American Music Awards took place last night, and one thing can be certain from looking at the red carpet photos: Black is the new black.

Stars strutted their stuff in long black looks that showed an amazing amount of restraint for the music crowd:
Selena Gomez stunned in a modest black gown by Giorgio Armani Prive:

Newcomer Charli XCX showed a little shoulder as she channeled old Hollywood glam in Vivienne Westwood.

Fergie showed some leg and touches of gold in her Halston Heritage gown.

Naya Rivera gave Morticia Addams a run for her money with this one, by Michael Kors. The killer body and the cleavage certainly got our attention!13834580-standard

Even the guys got into the act. In this case, there was only “OneDirection”: Dress in black!

Code Red (Carpet)

January 15, 2013

It’s awards season, and for me, the best part of the show is watching the actresses walk the red carpet. While each year brings out the good, the bad and the ugly, this year tended towards the latter.

These are generally beautiful women, with great figures with highly paid stylists to help them select the perfect look, which are often loaned to them by the designer. So, with the entire fashion world at their feet, why so many missteps?

It seemed to me that the stylist of choice last night was Randy Fenoli, the fashion director at Kleinfeld’s and a star of the TLC reality show, ā€œSay Yes to the Dress.ā€ While a few looked like brides, many looked like bridesmaids. I had no idea taffeta was a trendy fabric!

Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera

One of my favorite scenes in ā€œThe Sound of Musicā€ was the one in which the nanny makes outfits for the entire Von Trapp family out of the curtains in her bedroom.

Apparently, Lucy Liu shares my sentiments. A beautiful woman, wearing a dress made out of draperies, completed her look with a Heidi-esque side braid.

Lena Dunham in Zac Posen

Lena Dunham in Zac Posen

Lena Dunham did have her former baby sitter make her dress, albeit not from upholstery of any kind. Designer Zac Posen whipped up a gown for his grown up charge, who won awards for her hit show ā€œGirls.ā€

Eva Longoria in Pucci

The Angelina leg was such a hit last year that lots of actresses tried to top it. It looked contrived when she did it. It looked pathetic when they emulated it.
