Shirting The Issue

September 17, 2015

New York Fashion Week is almost over, and amid the whirlwind of shows, parties and street style, a few trends are emerging that we can start to wear right now.

The crisp tailored shirt has proven to be influential this season, with designers re-tooling the classic into dresses, tunics and new variations on the ultimate topper to almost everything.

VERA WANG1

Vera Wang

Vera Wang cut an oversized version worn with briefs and a bra, in a new riff on a sexy look.

Phillip Lim

Phillip Lim layered a long and lean version over tiny shorts, with a tied waist and cuffs.

_KOR0749

Michael Kors

Michael Kors paired the oversized white shirt with a sunny yellow suede wrap skirt.

_ARC0371

DKNY

Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School debuted their first collection for DKNY this season, with an urban take on the white shirt, featuring a longer length and a photo printed street scene.

Now is the perfect time to put your crisp white shirt back into heavy rotation. Proportion is everything, and borrowing from the boys is the freshest way to update this classic. Pants optional.

The Met Gala: What were they thinking?

May 5, 2015

We promised to cover the Met Gala red carpet, to see who slayed it and who missed the mark. Silly us, worried about cultural missteps. We should have been concerned with fashion faux pas. Tassels and headresses and glitz, oh my!
How do you say ” Oy vey” in Mandarin?

Designers are embracing the arctic chill this season by showing new twists on the fur stole. These oversized fur scarves are appearing everywhere, offering both form and function as they add a luxe element to every look.

Good Sports

December 19, 2014

Designers are showing their pre-fall collections for 2015 and from the looks of things, sporty chic is here to stay.

The edgy, street smart look of season’s past gets an upgrade with sophisticated silhouettes and luxurious materials.

Michael Kors topped his red and white track pants with a turtleneck sweater and tailored peacoat for a classically American take on sportswear.

Borrow From the Boys

December 11, 2014

We are just starting to dig into our fall wardrobes, just as stores are feverishly marking  down winter attire to make room for spring merchandise.

If that feels a little escalated, think about this: designers are showing their “pre-fall” collections, which will ship into stores in mid to late 2015. The good news is, that there are trends for next season that you can start gearing up for now; often at 30% off!
Designers are borrowing from the boys next season, with many showing classic menswear elements with quirky new proportions and luxe fabrications.

Gucci_15_1366

Gucci showed grey flannel trousers, cropped above the ankle, with a bejeweled version of a crew neck sweater and shirt. It’s topped with a chic camel coat and worn with tricolored high heeled oxfords.

Nab it now: A classic camel coat, and a shetland or cashmere sweater. Bonus points for finding cropped trousers.

Gucci_21_1366

Gucci also showed a Fairisle sweater over slim ankle skimming tweed pants.

Nab it now: It is prime time for this type of sweater, which tends to make it’s appearance near the holidays. Pick one up on sale and love it even more next fall.

Michael_Kors_08_1366Michael Kors plays black and white polka dots off of cropped trousers in a salt and pepper donegal. Love the saddle shoes and crisp white shirt!

Nab it now: You can never have too many white shirts, so finding the perfect one on the sale rack is a coup. That polka dot sweater might be kicking around somewhere, so be on the lookout.

Michael_Kors_19_1366Kors kept the classic sweater and shirt look going, this time pairing it with crisp denim with a wide cuff. That (faux) fur jacket pulls it all together and makes it look new.

Nab it now: Again, look for the classics, including button down shirts and crew neck sweaters. Camel or grey seem like winning shades to pick up. If you stumble on a great faux fur jacket in a retro-modern silhouette, grab it!

Gucci_25_1366

Gucci also showed pulled together denim, although more distressed than Kors. The patterned sweater and shirt combo under a piped peacoat brings richness and  texture into the mix.

Nab it now: Outerwear will be at major discounts soon, and you can’t go wrong with a chic take on a peacoat. Be on the lookout for non-Christmas-y versions of patterned sweaters.

Rebecca_Taylor_16_1366

How great does this outfit look from Rebecca Taylor? An oversized, chunky sweater and a new riff on the jean jacket top a lacy feminine skirt.
Nab it now: Holiday skirts in lace, feathers or other interesting textures will be going on sale any minute now. Pick one up to pair back to a longer, chunky knit sweater, which you might just find out there too!

Oxford shoes, especially two toned versions seem to be great finishing touches. Keep your eyes peeled for some to update your look right now.

Black is the New Black

November 24, 2014

The American Music Awards took place last night, and one thing can be certain from looking at the red carpet photos: Black is the new black.

Stars strutted their stuff in long black looks that showed an amazing amount of restraint for the music crowd:
Selena Gomez stunned in a modest black gown by Giorgio Armani Prive:

Pump Up the Volume

October 10, 2013

Hold onto your skinny jeans because full fluid pants are making a comeback for Spring 2014.

High waisted trousers with lots of volume hit the runways this season, paired with the simplest of tops. No need to wait for spring to pump up the volume. Wear this look for fall with a soft blouse of fine gauge turtleneck, to get a jump on the trend.

Marni showed wide legged grey trousers with simple black sweater.

Code Red (Carpet)

January 15, 2013

It’s awards season, and for me, the best part of the show is watching the actresses walk the red carpet. While each year brings out the good, the bad and the ugly, this year tended towards the latter.

These are generally beautiful women, with great figures with highly paid stylists to help them select the perfect look, which are often loaned to them by the designer. So, with the entire fashion world at their feet, why so many missteps?

It seemed to me that the stylist of choice last night was Randy Fenoli, the fashion director at Kleinfeld’s and a star of the TLC reality show, “Say Yes to the Dress.” While a few looked like brides, many looked like bridesmaids. I had no idea taffeta was a trendy fabric!

Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera

One of my favorite scenes in “The Sound of Music” was the one in which the nanny makes outfits for the entire Von Trapp family out of the curtains in her bedroom.

Apparently, Lucy Liu shares my sentiments. A beautiful woman, wearing a dress made out of draperies, completed her look with a Heidi-esque side braid.

Lena Dunham in Zac Posen

Lena Dunham did have her former baby sitter make her dress, albeit not from upholstery of any kind. Designer Zac Posen whipped up a gown for his grown up charge, who won awards for her hit show “Girls.”

The Angelina leg was such a hit last year that lots of actresses tried to top it. It looked contrived when she did it. It looked pathetic when they emulated it.

Cut It Out

October 23, 2012

A subtle peek skin, is often sexier than a more overt gesture. This season, designers opted for a new kind of peep show, with strategically placed cut outs enhancing sleek dresses.

Michael Kors long lean black column is cut to create a geometric effect.

Carven takes a simple red wool dress and makes it seductive, with cut out sides.

Cushnie Et Ochs shows some skin with sophisticated dresses in black or white.

Any way you cut it, these dresses are a modern and sexy must-have for spring.
