Sustainable, Biodegradible and EDIBLE?!

March 28, 2016

Hero-Edible-Spoons-Bakeys-Biodegradable-Cutlery-Silverware-Ecofriendly-Utensils

Take out food is a huge business in big cities, and with that comes disposable containers, cutlery and napkins. That one-time-use plastic cutlery may spend a matter of minutes transporting food from plate ( also made of plastic) to mouth, but it will live a lifetime in a landfill. Some work has been done to create biodegradable disposable utensils, but what if there was a better idea?
Narayana Peesapaty, of Hyderabad, India has come up with a product that is not only earth friendly, but is also edible.

Bakeys are disposable utensils made from a mixture of rice, millet and sorghum, which are baked dry and formed into spoons. Sorghum is one of the most sustainable crops, using less land water to grow than rice or corn. It is also able to grow in 95% of the world’s arable land. For the energy expended to produce one plastic spoon, Bakeys can product 100 sorghum based spoons. Even if the diner chooses not to eat the utensil, it degrades quickly, leaving no major environmental impact behind.

Currently the spoons come in three flavors; plain, sweet and spicy. There are plans afoot to produce plates, forks, knives and chopsticks, as well as new flavors.

The company’ s kickstarter campaign has raised over $79,000 so far, against their goal of $20,000, with 19 days to go.

Brilliant.

The Herbivorous Butcher

January 14, 2016

Just because you’ve given up meat, it doesn’t mean you are relegated to a life of lettuce, grains and beans.

Herbivorous Butcher - Vegan Chili Cheese Dog

This month, Minneapolis will be host to the first ever vegan butcher shop. Yep, a vegan butcher shop.

Called the Herbivorous Butcher, the shop will sell a range of plant based items that have the look, texture and flavor of real meat, without the animal cruelty.

Siblings Aubry and Kale (for reals!) Walch raised over $50,000 with thier Kickstarter campaign to help them bring their vegan delicacies to the mainstream public.

Their offererings include vegan takes on Italian sausages, pulled pork, maple glazed bacon and BBQ ribs, as well as classics like filet mignon, corned beef and meatballs. All are prepared in small batches, using sustainable and cruelty free processes.

Stay tuned for their grand opening January 23.

In The Hood

January 8, 2016

Congratulations, you made it through the first week of the new year! Heading back to the day to day drudgery after the holidays is exhausting, right? The weather didn’t help in most locations, with New York sliding from a balmy 73 degrees on Christmas Eve to a brisk, freezing 14 degrees seemingly overnight. Even L.A. saw some much needed rain, and the points in between are struggling with snow, tornadoes and generally miserable weather. Don’t you wish you could just snuggle up under your hoodie and discretly take a nap?
The founders of Hypnose Hoodie feel you, and have come to the rescue. According to their kickstarter page:

40bb0f3321a3861e5719fab13edbf6f3_original“The Hypnos Hoodie is a beautiful, comfortable and practical hoodie designed for creatives, travelers, commuters and anybody who has a moment to take a rest. It’s more than a hoodie, it’s your day-to-day (and day-to-night) essential comfort garment, and it does things other hoodies can’t– The hood inflates to form a perfectly ergonomic pillow for rest on the go. ”

Thanks to a valve inside the hood where one can inflate it to create a pillow, this garment is perfect for travel, or a midday nap. Check out the genius that is the Hypnose Hoodie and support their kickstarter campaign to get one of your own. With only 3 days left to go on their campaign, they have already raised $254,522, blowing away their $30,000 goal.

Stop Sending Dirty Texts

May 2, 2012

I admit it; I am a bit of a germophobe. I wipe down the equipment at the gym before I use it, and douse myself in Purell the minute I get off the subway. I hate food that others have freely touched (Salad bars? Yuck!) and wash my hands the minute I get in the door.

It is no surprise that I love this little invention: a device that sanitizes your cell phone while it charges.

PhoneSoap consists of a box with UV lights on either side to simultaneously clean both sides of the phone. The box can be used alone, or with the USB cord provided to charge it at the same time.

Three to five minutes of UV exposure is enough to kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses and is considered safe for humans.

With one in every six phones testing positive for fecal matter, we think everyone needs one of these (or needs to stop pooping and texting at the very least!)

PhoneSoap is currently available for preorder on Kickstarter for $39 and will be delivered in August 2012.
