The Gift of Thanks

Here I am, back on my high horse talking about modern manners. I shared a previous rant about those who don’t respond to invitations, or those who respond and then don’t  show up, leaving the hostess high and dry. Today’s rant is about gratitude.

Last week, I made a select amount of s’mores gift boxes and hand delivered them to a few editors and writers I admired, in honor of National S’mores Day.

One lovely recipient posted a photo on her company’s Instagram account with a shout out, and the “likes” flooded in. During the course of the day, there were subsequent posts on the company’s other accounts, and a fave on Twitter. The poster also “liked” some of my photos and started following me on Instagram. This resulted in a spike in views on my website and Etsy shop, as well as a ton of “likes and follows” on my Instagram site. To those not social media savvy, I must sound like a 15 year old, seeking validation from others, one click at a time. Those who do this for a living know that it is the way we grow brand awareness in 2015. I am extremely grateful for the support these people showed me, and they completely outdid themselves with multiple posts that put many thousands of sets of eyeballs on Indigo Jones Eats s’mores. I ‘grammed and tweeted my appreciation back at ’em, sharing the joy with my miniscule amount of followers.

The other four recipients did not respond at all. Not a peep.

Before we get too carried away, I must say that my intent was not 100% pure.  This was a public relations initiative, and the desired response was social media exposure. A well placed tweet, or a tagged Instagram shot is worth a thousand words of thanks.( See above.) But if for some reason they didn’t want to play; perhaps an overwhelming amount of free items flood thier offices each week and policy prohibits them from issueing a public acceptance. Perhaps they ended up in the office pantry, gobbled up before they could be ‘grammed. Maybe they didn’t like marshmallows. Whatever the reason, its their perogative not to display my wares on their social media sites if they don’t want to. I completly understand and support that decision. I knew going in that I may or may not get a public response. I did it with the intent to grow my brand awareness and expose Indigo Jones Eats to a broader audience.  I do however, feel I deserve some sort of confirmation that they actually got the package. I am not expecting handwritten notes on beautifully letterpressed cards, although I suppose they could be in the mail as we speak. I was expecting that their assistant’s junior intern might shoot me a one line email saying thanks for the treats. As an aside, some of these people have posted dog pictures, old photos of haircuts past, and their latest manicures, so I know they are around, and posting mindless follies.

Hence, the Miss Manners in me emerging once again. Shouldn’t there be some form of office protocol to respond to what must be, for some, a huge amount of promotional gifts? I certainly would want my brand to be known as gracious, appreciative and at the very least polite to the outside world. I have to say that it skewed my perception of these people ever so slightly.

In the anonymous world of social media, it easy to think that you have a relationship with someone because they share tidbits of their life with you and the general public. We quantify our self worth through “likes” from total strangers, often forgetting to actually acknowledge the real people who reach out to us. So, here is a not so subtle reminder to always remember to say thank you, no matter how small the gesture of kindness might be. (Or the motive behind it.)

In the meantime, if you happen to be reading this, and you know who you are, I have a message for you:

This Pretty Much Sums it Up!

Since the launch of indigo jones eats, I’ve learned a lot about taking my passion: cooking, and doing it in a large quantity, on demand. I am so excited that people have embraced my little endeavor, and orders are coming in!
I have chosen to make things that are multi-faceted and time consuming. Each item is made by hand, and has multiple components. Assembling the items and packages takes a lot of time. Because I am just starting out, I am making my own labels and packaging, and sometimes doing deliveries myself, in addition to baking.
While I LOVE every second of it, I have to admit that I am figuring it out as I go. Each new order is met with exhilaration and a little fear, as I calculate what it takes to fill it. So far, it’s all good. Orders are going out on time, and met with rave reviews. I even manage to get the kitchen cleaned up before starting the next batch! Even so, I can’t help but feel a little like Lucy in one of my favorite television moments of all time:

Kitchen Tips Tuesday: Rolling Cookie Dough

We’ve been making a lot of cookies lately. { Insert shameless plug for indigo jones eats here.} Most recipes call for refrigerating the dough before rolling it, which allows the gluten to relax, therefore reducing shrinkage and making for a flakier outcome. With a super sticky dough like gingerbread, chilling makes it just firm enough to be handle. It also makes most doughs really hard to roll out.

I have wasted lots of time letting the dough chill, only to have to let it sit to soften it enough to roll out.
While I was testing recipes for graham crackers to use to make my s’mores, I came across one that called for rolling the dough between 2 sheets of waxed or parchment paper, and then chilling it. While that recipe did not make the final cut, it did change my life. Since then, I have been rolling all of my cookie doughs this way, laying them on a baking sheet, and popping them into the refrigerator. The results have been spectacular.

When you’re ready to roll, just peel off the top sheet, cut the dough into the desired shapes, lift it off of the bottom sheet with a spatula and viola;  perfect cookies!
For my hand shaped shortbread spoons, I have been chilling them after they are formed, and before they are baked with great success.

Indigo Blues

Lately I am obsessing over indigo. Yeah, I guess since I named my blog Indigo Jones, it’s on my mind a lot.

I loving the rich hues of indigo blues. The shades, the tones and way the color bleeds so beautifully, creating interesting effects.  The slightly bohemian style of deep blue embroidery on crisp white cottons. The way that indigo wears and fades, becoming a whole new shade in the process.

While it seems to be a fashion trend right now, it’s something that never goes out of style.

Easy Menu for a Hot Evening

Last week, I had a lot of house guests, and not a lot of time. The temperatures were in the high 90’s and humid, making using the oven for a prolonged period of time unappealing.

When I get time crunched, I tend to  rely on our old standby “unrecipes”.

I created this easy menu, which was served as a buffet for 14 people.  All the food shopping and cooking was done the day of the event, except for the desserts, which were made the night before. I’d say it was a hit!

My battle with hors ‘doeurves is well documented, so I kept it super simple.

We started with an array of hummus, served with pita chips and baby carrots, and a big bowl of cold, steamed shrimp. All were purchased, and devoured.

For the main meal, we had balsamic marinated chicken, “tarted up” with lemon zest and parsley. We broiled salmon and served it with a low fat avocado cream on the side.

Rice with shallots, corn and mint, a watermelon and feta salad, and a cool celery salad with walnuts and parmesan were nice make-ahead side dishes that can be served at room temperature.

We finished the meal with cold desserts: a flour-less chocolate cake with white chocolate bourbon cream,( I owe you the recipe), fresh strawberries and a cheesecake.

Everyone seemed happy with the selection, and took home leftovers, a sure sign of a good meal!

CSA Tuesday + Unrecipe Round-Up

CSA Tuesday

Today is CSA Tuesday, and our selection is a bit Thanksgiving- esque in nature.

We got sweet potatoes, white potatoes, onions, thyme, turnips and several bunches of kale. We also got more radishes, to add to the 2 bunches that we didn’t eat last week.

Turnips look like big radishes, but have a much different flavor!

Potatoes and onions in various shades of reds and browns.  Perhaps I will roast them with the turnips and some herbs for a comforting winter dish.

Fresh herbs never seem to last very long, so I think I will try this trick I posted a while ago, for frozen herb butter:
