She Can’t Stop ( but maybe she should)

August 26, 2013

Miley Cyrus was the talk of the VMA’s last night. Her pitchy singing was completely overshadowed by her cringe worthy performance. Tongue out, twerking with people dressed as teddy bears, and rubbing up against a large bottomed African American woman, the display was more in poor taste than ground breaking. Her choice of all black dancers was in essence as racist as Paula Deen wanting only black servers to work at her southern themed party.

Stripping off her ill fitting fuzzy teddy, and continuing only in a nude colored bra and panties, she proceeded to “duet” with Robin Thicke, if you can count rubbing up against his crotch and pretending (?) to pleasure herself with a large foam finger a duet.

The Internet was instantly buzzing with negative reactions to her act, ranging from mortified moms to bored 30-somethings, and appalled people of all ages who were shocked by her misplaced sexuality, and tasteless behavior.

The following day brought even more discussion, with all of the websites and daytime talk shows going on and on about how inappropriate she was. For a young woman starving for attention, and trying to break out of a squeaky clean image, we would venture to say that her performance was extremely successful.

While she walked out of the awards show empty handed, she is getting more media attention than any of the winners. Isn’t that what she wanted in the first place?

What did you think of Miley’s raunchy performance last night?

Setting the Record Straight

January 29, 2013

The internet is buzzing about whether or not Jennifer Lawrence’s dress actually ripped as she stepped on stage to receive her SAG award last night.

The Christian Dior gown, fresh off the runways of Paris couture week, seemingly came apart exposing a mesh panel. Did it tear, or was it intentional?

We sent our super sleuth out to get the scoop…(that’s ME!!!)

Here is the gown, shown just last week at the Spring 2013 couture show:

VERDICT: Design detail, not wardrobe malfunction.Case closed.

Code Red (Carpet)

January 15, 2013

It’s awards season, and for me, the best part of the show is watching the actresses walk the red carpet. While each year brings out the good, the bad and the ugly, this year tended towards the latter.

These are generally beautiful women, with great figures with highly paid stylists to help them select the perfect look, which are often loaned to them by the designer. So, with the entire fashion world at their feet, why so many missteps?

It seemed to me that the stylist of choice last night was Randy Fenoli, the fashion director at Kleinfeld’s and a star of the TLC reality show, “Say Yes to the Dress.” While a few looked like brides, many looked like bridesmaids. I had no idea taffeta was a trendy fabric!

One of my favorite scenes in “The Sound of Music” was the one in which the nanny makes outfits for the entire Von Trapp family out of the curtains in her bedroom.

Apparently, Lucy Liu shares my sentiments. A beautiful woman, wearing a dress made out of draperies, completed her look with a Heidi-esque side braid.

Lena Dunham did have her former baby sitter make her dress, albeit not from upholstery of any kind. Designer Zac Posen whipped up a gown for his grown up charge, who won awards for her hit show “Girls.”

The Angelina leg was such a hit last year that lots of actresses tried to top it. It looked contrived when she did it. It looked pathetic when they emulated it.

Dance for Your Music

November 29, 2012

Scottish Musician Calvin Harris is offering his new album for free, via an iPhone app.

What’s the catch? The music only plays if the phone is moving.
It’s a fun ploy to encourage people to dance as they listen. The app also allows the user to unlock additional tracks by taking photos of the album cover.

For those looking for a more sedentary experience, the album, entitled “ 18 months”, is also available for purchase on iTunes.

Be on the lookout for more motion enabled apps in the future.

More than Just a Pretty Face?

April 18, 2012

These days, a recognizable name seems to be worth more than a barrel of talent or carefully cultivated skills.

Models complain that actresses and musicians have taken over the magazine covers that used to be their domain. Serious actors complain that reality stars get all the ratings and attention previously focused on them.  Fashion designers complain that models, actors, musicians and reality stars all have signature collections that they pretend to design. Jessica Simpson, (singer and reality star) even has a gig on a reality TV show, where she mentors young wannabees as if she actually designs the stuff bearing her name herself!

Today’s entry into the marketplace really rubs salt into our wounds.

Giselle Bundchen’s niece not only has a modeling contract with a Brazilian apparel firm, but she now has her own line bearing her name.

Did I mention she is 5 years old?

The collection, Duda Bundchen for Brandili Mundi, will hit the stores in July,
According to Germano Costa, the commercial and marketing director of Brandili Textile, “ Duda told us her preferences on prints, cuts and details, and based on the briefing we received from her, we came up with a collaborative collection.”

Let’s see if this little entrepreneur with good genes can actually guide a team of real designers (who must have LOVED taking direction from a 5 year old!) to create a successful brand.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to my (insert random career that I have no talent for here) class.
