Two Are Better Than One

December 4, 2015

Every December, the color experts at Pantone announce their choice for the color of the year. This time, they surprised us by declaring not one, but two shades, as the colors of the year for 2o16.

Serenity, an icy blue, and Rose Quartz, a soft classic pink, are intended to evoke a sense of gender equality and fluidity, reflecting in fashion, what is happening in society.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute: “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”

Pantone has commissioned street artists in Los Angeles, Miami and New York City to create murals overnight to depict the two shades.

Marsala

December 5, 2014

International color authority Pantone has named it’s color of the year for 2014 and it is…..

Marsala!

Pantone

It’s earthy and natural, which is a great departure from last year’s pick, Radiant Orchid. It’s not quite as rich a hue as burgundy, yet not as brown as what we’ve seen coming down the Spring ’15 catwalks.

The folks at Pantone describe it as:
“Sensual and bold, delicious Marsala is a daringly inviting tone that nurtures; exuding confidence and stability while feeding the body, mind and soul. Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this robust shade incorporates the warmth and richness of a tastefully fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots point to a sophisticated, natural earthiness.”

It is reminiscent of the faded damasks from the past.

It’s a beautiful leather color, which could add warmth to camels, browns, navy or black.

The cosmetics industry will have a field day with this shade, which works beautifully for lips, cheeks and nails on most complexions.

It’s autumnal, but works with all of the ’70s influences we will see for spring.

Done in tonals, both darker and more vibrant gives the color the richness it needs.

Trend Seminar: Day 1

June 13, 2012

We’re wrapping up our first round of presentations here in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Four of us, representing studios from around the world, spoke to a group on color, fashion and lifestyle trends for Fall 2012.

The group included ,Tony Bannister of Scout in Sydney, Australia, Louise Klarsten of Colourhouse in Sweden,David Shah,of Textile View Magazine in London and Alberto Costabella, of A+A Design Studio in Milan.  And of course me, Shari Hershon of ESP Trendlab in New York.

(that’s me on the end!)

It was an upbeat day, with 4 very different approaches to very similar ideas.

(Here is David, talking about happiness.)

In between, we had a little fun, as you can see below:

(There is a distinct cross-cutural trend that we all spoke about. Here, the boys play dress up and take it the trend to a whole new place!)

We’re packing it up and hopping on the train to Stockholm to do it all over again tomorrow! Stay tuned…

Take it to the Streets

June 11, 2012

The weather in Gothenburg, Sweden is cold and wet. While it may feel more like October than June, the stores tell a different story.

Color is everywhere, and garden florals are abundant.

Bare tops, dresses, and swimwear grace the windows, in the hope that soon it will be warm enough to be able to wear them.

The look here is casual, yet feminine, and the vibe is very relaxed.  I hope the sun comes out soon!
