Blogger Boredom

June 30, 2014

You might want to sit down for this one…

I’m getting bored with blogs. There, I said it. I’m ready to move on. What’s next?

Fashion blogs in particular are quickly losing their luster for me. The genre started with unique young women with great style, who took to the internet as a vehicle to share their sensibilities with the cyber world. Today, the web is saturated with pretty “young -ish” women, narcissistically sharing their every bland outfit, manicure and soy latte, painstakingly documented by their husband or boyfriend.  While I won’t name names, there are a few very high profile, highly paid bloggers, whom I couldn’t pick out of a line up of “pretty enough” blondes in ordinary clothes, trying to be extraordinary.

Their loyal followers comment on every post, stroking their super sized egos, and scampering to recreate their basic-at-best looks. On the flip side, the bloggers who really stepped out, showcasing their eclectic and truly original style have been watered down by the designers and brands that now endorse them.

While I am sure there are still a group who offer great insight into the world of fashion, they aren’t the biggest or most successful ones.

These bloggers epitomize the meme of the “basic bitch:” unoriginal and just doing what everyone else does.

I look to blogs to inspire, inform, amuse and educate me. Show me emerging trends, and how to wear them. Show me your own twist on the “it” item and make me want to wear it. Talk about a new sleeve roll or a novel way to layer a tee shirt. Go big or frankly, just go home.

Now that everyone and their mother is a blogger, regardless of their style, it’s gotten a little dull. How do we disrupt this space and make fashion blogs interesting again?

Until then, we are destined to live in a mundane world of pumpkin spice lattes, logo covered ballet flats and Ugg boots, while we wait for the next round of originality emerge.
