Code Red (Carpet)

It’s awards season, and for me, the best part of the show is watching the actresses walk the red carpet. While each year brings out the good, the bad and the ugly, this year tended towards the latter.

These are generally beautiful women, with great figures with highly paid stylists to help them select the perfect look, which are often loaned to them by the designer. So, with the entire fashion world at their feet, why so many missteps?

It seemed to me that the stylist of choice last night was Randy Fenoli, the fashion director at Kleinfeld’s and a star of the TLC reality show, “Say Yes to the Dress.” While a few looked like brides, many looked like bridesmaids. I had no idea taffeta was a trendy fabric!

One of my favorite scenes in “The Sound of Music” was the one in which the nanny makes outfits for the entire Von Trapp family out of the curtains in her bedroom.

Apparently, Lucy Liu shares my sentiments. A beautiful woman, wearing a dress made out of draperies, completed her look with a Heidi-esque side braid.

Lena Dunham did have her former baby sitter make her dress, albeit not from upholstery of any kind. Designer Zac Posen whipped up a gown for his grown up charge, who won awards for her hit show “Girls.”

The Angelina leg was such a hit last year that lots of actresses tried to top it. It looked contrived when she did it. It looked pathetic when they emulated it.
