Someone’s In The Kitchen With Jonesie

March 11, 2010

Someone’s in the kitchen with Jonesie and I LIKE it!! I love to cook, and our large open kitchen is a hub for many of our friends to congregate, and reap the benefits of my passion.

Lately, I have been working like crazy, and juggling all of the other things that life tosses at us. Ok, I admit it….. I am tired!!!
This week, I had the great privilege to have a gentleman or two cook me dinner.
Sunday, Alex made a gourmet feast of roasted beet salad, wild mushroom risotto, Swiss chard and braised beef. On Friday evening, as I raced out of work at 8 pm (unfinished, I might add) he was in my kitchen, roasting whole Red Snapper on a bed of potatoes with a salad and carrot, apple and cumin scented soup.

Sunday rolled around again, and I had a strategy meeting with people from out of town.
And what do you know, lucky me, Peter came by and made a German meal of roasted pork, cabbage with caraway seeds and potato dumplings the size of softballs!

Cooking is something I do, to make delicious and (usually) healthy choices, and the act of preparing food can be very creative and even relaxing for me. Feeding my family and friends is something I do to nurture and appreciate them. But did I mention how TIRED I am lately?
It was such a rare and wonderful experience to be on the receiving end of someone else’s hospitality in my own home.

Thank you Alex and Peter, for feeding my body and my soul.

Y-3 ‘s Prisoner of Love

February 15, 2010

Sunday marked not only Valentine’s Day, but also day 4 of New York Fashion Week. We are attending a few shows in person, and enjoying the rest (hundreds of them!) via computer screen in the comfort of the office.

Last night, we attended the Y-3 show, a collaboration between renowned Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto, and active wear giant, Addidas.

Yohji never fails to produce a spectacle, and last night was no different. The standing room only show began with a laser light show, and a parade of models sporting layers of modern, yet casual pieces. The theme was a bit dour, with prison stripes and tee shirt graphics counting days of incarceration, with text such as “33 Years with You” and “23 Years in Prison- 20 = Y-3”, all to a remix of Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.”

Although the “prisoner of love” concept was a bit downbeat, the items were pure fun, with great capes, easy dresses, and the “it” pant of the year, the low crotch trouser, done for both sexes in comfy knit. In true Yohji Yamamoto style, the clothes displayed an asymmetry, unique sense of proportion, and in some cases, beautiful origami-esque draping, all with an active twist.

The finale featured a group of models wearing colorful coats, who dropped them at the end of the runway, revealing; yup, you guessed it: prison stripes! After, Yohji walked the runway, and knocked out a male model in a faux kickboxing match, and was subsequently taken down by a female model.

Yamamoto’s business has been battered around a bit in the recent economy, and last night, Yamamoto did what he has been essentially been doing all year; after getting knocked down, he picked himself up, and waved to the crowd as he triumphantly walked off stage.

All in all, interesting clothes, great theatre, and a lesson in resiliency. It’s all in a day’s work!

The Fabric of Peace

February 12, 2010

Friends Seminary has commissioned artist Derick Melander to create a textile sculpture commemorating this year’s Peace Week theme, “Beyond the Numbers: The Economics of Peace”.

The purpose of the installation is to highlight one thread of our waste consciousness: clothing.

The installation, which went up this week, encourages the average consumer to ask:
What does clothing signify in our culture?
How much of what we own do we actually use?
How much clothing do we really need?
How can we help clothe someone in need?
What are the environmental implications of discarded clothing?

The Friends Seminary community has collected more than 1500 pounds of clothing to create the sculpture. Last week, students, parents, faculty and staff folded and stacked the clothing to create the work, entitled “The Fabric of Peace”.

The installation will be dismantled at the end of February, and all of the collected items will be sent to Haiti for victims of the recent earthquake.

Some people will go to any length to be fashionable. This frugal fashionista takes the cake. All we can say is “genius”!!!

Somehow, we think Coco Chanel would be proud.

Fashion bloggers have become the tastemakers and trendsetters of the world. But what happens when the blogger is only 13 years old? Meet Tavi Gevinson, the girl behind the site Style Rookie.

Tavi writes on designers and style, and features her own eclectic looks on the site each day. She recently caught the eye of Rodarte’s Mulleavy sisters, and Marc Jacobs, who invited Tavi to grace the front row of their Spring 2010 fashion shows.

Having reputedly amassed 4 million readers, and guest editing gigs with high profile magazines, Tavi is one of the hottest bloggers on the fashion scene. Her great style is indisputable, but this kid is clearly no rookie!

All the News That’s Fit to Print

December 10, 2009

Today, the New York Times Thursday Styles section was full of articles that were very informative.

First, there was a story about the infamous party crashers who showed up uninvited to a recent state dinner. According to the article: (Washington D.C.) is “a city about rules, about conventions and if there’s no keg at the party, it doesn’t get crashed.”  Good to know.

Next, a bit about Alexander Wang, the 25 year old fashion prodigy that has taken fashionistas and ”even some regular people who are not size 2” by a storm. Surprised? We are too!
There is a piece on New York City’s first Costco, now open in East Harlem. The question on everyone’s lips is “ How do you lug a car full of household items home from East 117th Street to lower Manhattan without a car? Doesn’t the $30 taxi ride (if you can find one) kind of off set the savings?

Then there is an article entitled “Hey Tannenbaum, Nice Outfit!” about Christmas displays in upscale stores. I have just one question that has haunted me for years:
Who is this Tannenbaum guy, and how did a Jew get to be a Christmas icon?

Oh, yeah, and don’t forget the study on why exerciser’s heart rates run about 15 beats lower in the morning than in the afternoon? Put the scientific info aside here: by 6 pm, most of us New Yorkers are so stressed out that our heart rates are elevated just from our daily commute!

And finally, a little ditty about how to stand out at the Art Basel show in Miami Beach: How about a REAL python for a necklace? Interesting.

Today the Times out did itself, following through on their motto, ” all the news that’s fit to print”!

Lately, it seems that everyone is a fashion expert. From Lindsay Lohan’s debacle as creative director at Ungaro, to Jon Gosselin trying to launch (unsuccessfully, I am relieved to report) a kid’s line, everyone who actually wears clothes, has become a self-proclaimed expert. But every once in a while, you stumble upon a site that has a fresh point of view, a great eye for trend, and a “tell it like it is” approach to reporting on it all. Such is the case with Refinery 29, a fashion blog that really gets it, in a non-pretentious, yet authoritative way.

Refinery 29 is a great destination for the newest and best in style, shopping and emerging trends. They deliver insightful reports on designers, global street style trends, new boutiques and sample sales, as well as the latest places to be, and people to watch.

Knock Your Socks Off!

November 17, 2009

Looking for a cute, economical wardrobe update? Many designers from Chanel to Dior showed socks with sandals on the runway for their Spring 2010 collections. We know, it sounds like the ultimate fashion “don’t”. The trick is to keep the look chic, not nerdy. To achieve this, stick with the following styling rules:

1. Shoes should have high heels and platforms,

2. The straps on the shoes should be wide, not delicate.

3. Socks should be of medium weight, and be able to scrunch above the ankle. Sweat socks are the ultimate faux pas.

Try this look with rolled up jeans and a feminine top, or a flirty dress. It’s young, fun and a fashionable way to make last summer’s sandals look new, and seasonally appropriate.

Chaos Restored

October 10, 2009

photo-9

We rented our loft out for a photoshoot today. After spending all day yesterday scrubbing and making the house pristine, all was for naught by about 8:01 am! With a crew of 20, (including 7 models) it didn’t take long to turn this place into a studio.

Hair dressers in the master bathroom, makeup in my closet/dressing room…Bailey’s room and the den a wardrobe room, and everywhere else, chaos!

Some shots were fun and some were quintessential sexy Cosmo!

Check out some of the out takes from our crazy day…..
